Your concerns about a public mental health and wellbeing service in Victoria

If you, or someone you care for, has had a negative experience while receiving mental health assessment or treatment, you have the right to make a complaint.

The Mental Health and Wellbeing Commission (MHWC) is an independent body that deals with complaints about mental health and wellbeing services funded by the Victorian government, including services delivered by a public hospital.

If you, or someone you care for, has had a negative experience while receiving mental health assessment or treatment, you have the right to make a complaint.

You can make a complaint directly to the service or you can contact the MHWC to make a complaint about the service with us.

Consumer Complaints

The MHWC can handle complaints about:

  • Services provided to you, such as about the treatment and care provided to you.
  • Access to services, for example, if you were refused a service.
  • Whether the service provider made all reasonable efforts to comply with the mental health and wellbeing principles or other principles in the Act.
  • If you made a complaint directly to a service provider, and you are not satisfied with the way they handled the complaint.

Carer Complaints

We can take complaints from carers, family members and supporters about their own experiences or on behalf of a consumer. Consumer consent may be required depending on the nature of the complaint, please contact us to discuss.
